The health of our civilization, the depth of our awareness about the underpinnings of our culture and our concern for the future can all be tested by how well we support our libraries. —Carl Sagan

My real education, the superstructure, the details, the true architecture, I got out of the public library. For an impoverished child whose family could not afford to buy books, the library was the open door to wonder and achievement, and I can never be sufficiently grateful that I had the wit to charge through that door and make the most of it. Now, when I read constantly about the way in which library funds are being cut and cut, I can only think that the door is closing and that American society has found one more way to destroy itself. —Isaac Asimov

A public library is the most democratic thing in the world. What can be found there has undone dictators and tyrants: demagogues can persecute writers and tell them what to write as much as they like, but they cannot vanish what has been written in the past, though they try often enough…People who love literature have at least part of their minds immune from indoctrination. If you read, you can learn to think for yourself.
― Doris Lessing

The library is the cornerstone for every community. Our mission is to inform and enrich the lives of the people here in Pinckneyville. We focus on bringing people together and building our community up!

Here at the Pinckneyville Public Library, we are here to help you with performing necessary online tasks, such as filling out job applications and applying for government assistance programs. This service is absolutely crucial during these times of economic uncertainty, and we look to continue playing an important part in keeping folks above water. Our librarians are always ready to help when needed! We also send faxes, make copies, and scan documents. The library has Wi-fi available for those who want to access it outside the building from  9 am- 8 pm daily. Tutors use our facility to help students after school and we proctor exams.

Before COVID-19, the library offered frequent in-person programs for different age groups; LEGO Club, Pre-K Story Time, Teen Game Night, STEM, Summer Reading, and Computer Basics. We also host presentations, workshops, and documentary viewings.  We have offered virtual Summer Reading and Story Time programs since the onset of the pandemic. We are continuing to learn how to provide these services to the best of our ability without jeopardizing the health and well-being of our community members. The Pinckneyville Public Library is adamant on promoting local talent, whether it be novels or artwork. We like to build members of our community up and let their hard work and creativity shine for others to see!

Of course, we have a growing collection of books, DVDs, audio books and CDs available for our patrons. If the book you want is not in our collection, we can request one from another library in the Illinois Heartland Library System for you! With your library card, you gain access to our eBook and eMagazine resources such as Cloud Library and Rb Digital.
